Caps For Kids

For knitters with a big heart and some left-over yarn, here is a great way to reach out and help those who are less fortunate.

Caps For Kids is a national, non-profit foundation that collects handmade caps for under-privileged children.  Founded in 1984 by Bonnie Greene and Nancy La Framboise, over 1,000,000 caps plus other articles of crochet and knit clothing and toys have been donated to underprivileged children across the United States.

The program is carried out through yarn shops across the country who have registered with CFK.  Participating shops collect the caps which are distributed in the community of the registered stores.  The hats are given to local, non-profit, non-denominational agencies to be given out.

There are about 280 stores across the United States that are participating in the Caps For Kids program.  An estimated 15,000 individuals are making not only crocheted and knitted caps, but gloves and mittens, slippers, scarfs, sweaters, baby blankets, booties, toys, etc. The Pittsburgh East Knitting guild collects donations though out the year and delivers them in December to various organizations in the Pittsburgh area where they are distributed to children in need.

Warm Up America

In 1991, a knitting yarn retailer in Wausau, Wisconsin, Evie Rosen, decided there had to be a way she could help the homeless. Her simple concept of asking customers, friends and the community to knit and crochet 7" X 9" sections that would be joined into afghans grew into a nationwide program that has produced more than 80,000 afghans. These afghans have been donated to victims of natural disasters, battered women's shelters, the homeless, and others less fortunate than ourselves.

In 1994, the Craft Yarn Council of America, a non-profit association of American yarn spinners, distributors and publishers, took the program under its wing, broadening awareness by initiating links with national organizations such as the American Red Cross and the Cooperative Extension Service. In 2002, Warm Up America! was incorporated as a 501C3 tax exempt, charitable organization.
